Fist, decide on what kind of a niche you might like to promote. You will be putting in some hours, so make it an area with products in which you are at least mildly interested. Your second step is to look for high converting products from merchants that are generous with their commission rates. Start writing a list of merchants you find with products you would like to sell, that are already selling well, and from which, the merchant is offering a suitable commission. Also, look to see what kind of affiliate support the merchant offers. Does he have graphics and images you can use in promotion of his products? Does he offer reports, email campaigns or articles, anything that you can use to sell the product?

Since there are a number of affiliate programs and networks out there for you to visit, there is no reason why you cannot find the product/merchant that is right for you. Just do your due diligence and research thoroughly.

Having found your niche product that you would like to sell, and after buying a domain name and creating a website for your base of operations, you are ready for the next step. Step 3 is product promotion. This is where hard work comes into play, although it will certainly not last that long. Once you have a good system and sharp strategy in place, it will not be at all difficult to create a serious income from affiliate marketing.

Product promotion is a huge topic and beyond the scope of this little article but you have your next step lined up: read everything you can find about promotion and marketing online. There are plenty of places you can go to find other articles, ebooks, ecourses and don’t forget to hang out in the forums and read the blogs that pertain to affiliate marketing.

Success is not found in a get rich quick scheme, so be prepared to work diligently and persistently. The testimonials of successful marketers and merchants are wonderful for motivational purposes, just remember that successful affiliate marketing involves a lot of persistence, creativity, flexibility and just plain old work that is hard and sometimes tough. But once the rewards start rolling in, it can be a lot of fun, too.

Many people fail to understand that successful affiliate marketing is about dogged persistence. When newbies put in a couple of weeks worth of work, and fail to see any return, they give up way too soon and label affiliate marketing as nothing more than a scam. By then, some other shiny object has lured them away with big promises about the “next greatest thing.”  This is a fool’s path to poverty. A fantastic income can be had through affiliate marketing, provided you are willing to put in the necessary work and be patiently persistent. You have to be willing to do what it takes to succeed.

It’s been just shy of a month now and progress has been slow.  I’ve made about $5 on Adsense and no sales with Clickbank or Amazon despite some clicks.  I know this is a marathon rather than a sprint, so I am going to keep pushing on promoting and editing the site until it’s a real moneymaker.
